The Deborah Mason School of Dance offers a
variety of performing arts classes and levels in ballet instruction, modern dance, hip hop, tap, jazz, and musical theater. Students receive
professional dance instruction from a faculty whose excitement and example enhance a program for students, ages 3 through 18. Learn more about the dance studio's instructors

The dance studio in Cambridge offers classes throughout the academic year, as well as summer programs. Students at the school are given performance opportunities, including a showcase performance in June at the Chevalier Theater in Medford.
The dance studio in Cambridge is also a part of the
Cambridge Youth Dance Program, a pre-professional dance training program developed and designed for dedicated dance students. To learn more, check out the

Basic Beginnings (ages 3-7)

Creative Dance I (3 years) & Creative Dance II (4 years)
Having fun, exploring movement and musicality by using games, props and instruments. Developing dance and spatial skills, learning to follow instructions while working in a supportive environment. Strengthening the body and brain, interacting with others - it all begins in creative dance classes.
(45 minutes, 1 class per week)
Pre-Ballet (5 years) & Primary Ballet (6 & 7 years)
Exploring ballet skills and vocabulary through creative dance, props, dress-up, while incorporating a story of ballet to the young dancers to make it fun and inspire the imagination.
(45 minutes or 1 hour, 1 class per week)
Primary Tap / Jazz I (5 years) & Primary Tap / Jazz II (6 & 7 years)
Basic understanding of correct body placement, simple patterns and rhythms. Focus is on improving coordination, strength, balance and flexibility through dance exercises and practicing self-expression within choreographed movement.
(45 minutes, 1 class per week)
Breakdance I (7-8 years)
B-boying or b-girling is a street dance style that is normally danced to pop, funk, or hip-hop music. Breakdancing is a remarkable discipline somewhere between those of dancers and athletes.

Elementary Years (ages 8-11)

Hip Hop (8-11 years)
Hip Hop takes on the styles of many forms of dance, including Breakdance, Poppin', Krumpin', and Video Dance. Once a student has reached a certain level, he/she may audition for our Hip Hop team where all styles are combined in a Repertory class.
(1 hour in length, 1 class per week or more)
Tap / Jazz Combo (8-11 years)
30 minutes of tap dancing, a form of artistic expression that uses the foot as a percussive instrument; 30 minutes of jazz, defining characteristics, including improvisation, isolation, and the style of Broadway.
(1 hour in length, 1 class per week)
Ballet I (8-11 years)
Dancers learn the foundations of ballet technique, body awareness, coordination, rhythm, musicality, and the joy of movement. This is a transitional class geared to more serious levels of technical training.
(1 hour in length, 1 class per week)
Modern Level I & II (10+ years)
Modern contemporary dance principles include: centering, alignment, gravity, breath, contraction, release, fall and recovery, suspension, balance and off-balance, tension and relaxation, opposition and emotion.
(1 hour in length, 1 class per week)
Pre-Teen - Adult

Ballet II (10+ years)
Dancers expand on their ballet technique, vocabulary, body awareness, coordination, rhythm, and musicality. This is a transitional class geared to more serious levels of technical training.

Tap Level II (11-15 years)
An American form of artistic expression that uses the foot as a percussive instrument. Students explore the various styles; broadway, jazz tap, hoofin.
