I joined a book club recently and was searching everywhere for our latest pick. After checking out a few bookstores and not even finding the book, I was thrilled to find it in the bargain basement used book section at Brookline Booksmith - it was only $7! I picked up some things in their gift section too for 75% off!

There are so few indie bookstores left around this country, and as soon as you walk into Booksmith you can understand how this one survived. These people know books. They know readers. And most important of all, they know their neighborhood. That must be why they've been around since 1961. They've gotten even better at what they do since a B&N moved in a block away 15 years ago, and now at the end of 2008 that predatory outfit is giving up and closing up shop. I love this store, and I love that they beat a chain!

I have never understood the excitement about this shop. It is a decent community bookstore that has decent new titles. The used books are not very good and parking is a nightmare.

I love this store! They have a huge selection of books and I can always find the best cards in the gift section. Don't forget to check out the used books and movie section downstairs.

This shop is a book lover's dream. They pack everything in, from the popular to the obscure in every genre. What really sets them apart though is the knowledge, helpfullness and enthusiasm of the staff. You get the sense that they really love books and love helping you find what you need. And they always have guest speakers and readers dropping in.
