South Boston is a neighborhood in Boston, just south of the Fort Point Channel and adjacent to Dorchester Bay. Commonly referred to as "Southie" by its residents, South Boston is well recognized by locals and throughout the country as being a storied and gritty Irish-Catholic community. It was in Southie, once known as Dorchester Heights, that George Washington placed his cannon and forced the evacuation of the British troops from Boston on March 17, 1776, at the height of the American Revolution. South Boston is famous across the nation for its St. Patrick's Day Parade, and the recent political contention over the rights of gay and lesbian groups to participate.

Southie has been made popular in American Pop Culture as well, by the media's stories of mobster James "Whitey"? Bulger, The Dropkick Murphys, Good Will Hunting, Mystic River, Boondock Saints, Southie, and most recently the Oscar winning The Departed.
