Welcome to Chinatown
Chinatown, located in Downtown Boston, is the only historically Chinese area in New England and the third largest Chinese neighborhood in the country. Central to the Boston Common, Downtown Crossing, and the South End Chinatown remains the center of Asian- American lifestyles in New England where both locals and tourists are drawn to the areas largest selection of Chinese, Japanese, Cambodian, and Vietnamese restaurants, bakeries and markets. The area was first discovered in the 1880’s, due to fleeing anti-Chinese attitudes on the West Coast. Before this the land was reclaimed by filling a tidal flat, it was inhabited by Anglo Saxton Protestant Settlers, followed by a mix of European Immigrants. It was not until the late-nineteenth century, that the garment manufacturing plants moved to Boston creating the Historical Garment District. Today, when in Chinatown be sure to check out one of the deliciously trendy Shabu eateries where you cook your food at your table.
