Boston Common, along with the public garden is the start of the Freedom Trail. This park historically rich in history is the location of several events during the American Revolution. Dating from 1634 the 50 acre Common is the oldest park in the country. Originally owned by William Baxton and intended to be a cow pasture later used as a camp by the British before the Revolutionary War, hosting the Battle of Lexington and Concord. Following the war it was used for public hangings up until 1817. Currently serving as a great topic for many tours such as the famous “ghost and ghouls” in the fall months. Many famous individuals since its establishment have made speeches on the common such as Martin Luther King Jr., Pope John Paul II and Judy Garland. Today the common serves as a public park for informal and formal gatherings such as concerts. Its central location in Downtown leading up to the state house is a must see any season of the year.
